Kelly Lawson
I'm Patrick Kelly Lawson, a lifelong lover of music. My journey began in 1963 when my older brother Skip got a drum set for physical therapy, and I quickly became captivated by it. I’d sneak in time on his Ludwig kit, learning rock rhythms by jamming along to his records.
In 1975, I joined my first band, Herb Schwartz, and met future notable musicians like Jimi Kidd, who became well-known in Chicago. My career has taken me through many genres—from rock to disco—often in pursuit of new gig opportunities. In 1978, I joined the disco/lounge band Mike Scott and Morning Breeze, and later played with legendary bassist Felton Crews and with Rusty Taylor of Miami Sound Machine.
In 1980, I moved to Lake Tahoe with my wife Cindy and played with many talented musicians, including Pat Mastelatto, who went on to join King Crimson. After returning to Chicago in 1985, I played with numerous bands, including Cubes, which I was part of for 20 years. I also performed with Cook County Blues and spent 12 years with the Greg Favata Orchestra, playing corporate gigs and private parties.
I’ve always had a day job, whether driving trucks, working as a mechanic, or coaching, while pursuing my passion for music. In 2015, I joined Get Back Chicago and later tried out for the Eliminator Band, diving into the ZZ Top catalog and continuing to be inspired by the incredible legacy of Billy Gibbons, Dusty Hill, and Frank Beard.
Someday, I hope to play like Frank.
